Next to Moneybird

Moneybird is the best-known accounting package for freelancers in the Netherlands and it has earned that position. The difference comes down to two things: how many languages the application really speaks, and what your price depends on.

Short answer

Moneybird is the most popular Dutch accounting package for freelancers, with an interface in Dutch, English and German and a price that rises with your volume: from €3 a month (Compact, 5 transactions) to €41 a month (Compleet, unlimited), with a 60-day free trial. Booxx costs €19 a month with no transaction cap and works in five languages — Dutch, English, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian — with the ledger accounts, the outgoing emails and the explanations of the VAT boxes translated as well. If you read Dutch easily and want lots of integrations, Moneybird is the safer choice; if you don't read Dutch, you can't run the core of your bookkeeping there yourself.

Choose Moneybird if…

  • you read Dutch, English or German easily;
  • you need integrations with a web shop, till system or time tracking;
  • your bookkeeper already works with Moneybird;
  • you want a mobile app rather than a website;
  • you post so little that €3 a month is enough.

Choose us if…

  • you read Polish, Hungarian or Romanian and Dutch is getting in your way;
  • your ledger and your outgoing post need to be in your language too;
  • you post a lot and don't want your price tracking your volume;
  • you have books that are dormant for part of the year;
  • you want several sets of books under one login.

Questions about switching

Can I bring my bookkeeping with me if I switch?

Yes. Every Dutch accounting package can produce an audit file (XAF) — that's a legal requirement. You import it here, including your chart of accounts, your entries and your open items.

Can I switch halfway through the year?

Yes. You pick a start date, import your audit file or your opening balance, and post here from that point on. The periods you've already filed with your previous package stay there.

Will my bookkeeper work with this?

They can see your books if you let them in, and they get the audit file in the format they're used to. If they'd rather work in their own package, that audit file is exactly what they need.

Why do you name your competitors?

Because you're going to compare anyway, and because we aren't better on every point. Above, per package, you'll find when you're better off there. That's fairer, and it saves you a month of trying things out.
