Moneybird is the best-known accounting package for freelancers in the Netherlands and it has earned that position. The difference comes down to two things: how many languages the application really speaks, and what your price depends on.
Moneybird is the most popular Dutch accounting package for freelancers, that works in Dutch and English, with a price that rises with your volume: from €3 a month (Compact, 5 transactions) to €41 a month (Compleet, unlimited) on annual billing — cancel-monthly it is €4 to €49 — with a 60-day free trial. The package booxx costs €19 a month with no transaction cap and works in five languages — Dutch, English, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian — with the ledger accounts, the outgoing emails and the explanations of the VAT boxes translated as well. If you read Dutch easily and want lots of integrations, Moneybird is the safer choice; if you read neither Dutch nor English, you can't run the core of your bookkeeping there yourself. You bring your old books along as an audit file (XAF); it is imported here, ledger and open items included.
Moneybird has four packages, and the price depends on how many bank transactions you process per month: Compact costs €3 (5 transactions), Start €15 (20), Groei €29 (50) and Compleet €41 a month (unlimited) on annual billing; paid monthly, that is €4, €18, €35 and €49. All four packages are paid — what is free is the 60-day trial, during which you use Compleet. Compact does not include the electronic VAT return. The booxx package costs €19 a month, with no cap on the number of transactions.

Compare DigiBooxNot a bookkeeping package but an invoicing app — and one that does speak Polish, Hungarian and Romanian. It does not mention bookkeeping: you share invoices and expenses with your bookkeeper.
Compare eFaktura.nlThe package booxx has two plans: Standard (€19 a month, everything included, with VAT returns and automatic bank reconciliation) and Dormant (€4 a month, read-only for a set of books that is temporarily dormant). You start with a 90-day trial of the full product, with no payment method up front; nothing is charged during that period, so there is nothing to cancel. All amounts are per set of books per month, excluding VAT, and cancellable monthly. There are no setup fees. Standard has no limits at all: unlimited invoices, entries and bank transactions, and unlimited users — colleagues and your accountant work alongside you at no extra cost.
PricingFive languages, and not just in the menus: the ledger accounts, the guidance on every VAT box and your invoices are in the language you read. The bookkeeping underneath stays Dutch, because the rules are.

FeaturesWith the audit file from Moneybird. According to its own help page you create it under Instellingen > Boekhouding > Boekhouding exporteren. A ledger code is required for the export; the RGS reference code is optional. Download the file before you run the year-end closing, otherwise it is not complete. Exporting in version 4.0 has been possible since November 2025. You import the file into booxx when you create your administration: your chart of accounts, your entries and your open items come across. Create one file per financial year, before you cancel the old subscription.
Yes, if your previous package can produce an audit file (XAF). According to the Dutch Belastingdienst most Dutch accounting packages support it. You import the file here, including your chart of accounts, your entries and your open items.
Yes. You pick a start date, import your audit file or your opening balance, and post here from that point on. The periods you've already filed with your previous package stay there.
Yes. In booxx you invite them for free with the Bookkeeper role: they post entries, manage the ledger and prepare the VAT return in your administration, and each of you works in your own language. Letting your bookkeeper in is possible in most packages: according to their own websites it is free in Moneybird (Bookkeeper role, does not count towards your user limit), e-Boekhouden.nl and MoneyMonk; in Jortt you invite them as a user or they link your administration from their bookkeeper portal, in DigiBoox you add them as an extra user (cost not stated), and in eFaktura they can look in on every plan. If they'd rather work in their own package, they get the audit file (XAF) in the format they're used to.

In booxx you request a firm environment: one worklist across all your clients, while your client reads their own screen in Polish, Hungarian, Romanian or English. Your firm pays from €9 per managed administration per month, excluding VAT, with no fixed firm fee.
